The Gospel. What is there that can be said about the gospel? Are there multiple gospels? Are there different messages other than “The Gospel”? There are those who have a liberal philosophy that anything can be the gospel as long as you believe it. This is obviously false and any sincere christian won’t be deceived by this. There are others who believe in a deeper message than the gospel, that there is special revelation that only select groups or persons have. This is false and errant.
6 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:
7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.
8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
9 As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.
It would do us well to really grasp the words in this passage. It clearly says the “gospel of Christ”. It does not say the gospel of a church, the gospel of a preacher, the gospel of a christian but only the gospel of Christ. If we falter from this course, we are accursed. The writer here even states that sometimes it is not even another gospel but a perversion of the gospel of Christ. The gospel with just a small deviation is not the gospel of Christ but blasphemy and heresy. There is much that could be said on this passage alone but I will try not to encumber this post with excessive details.
10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
This concept is all well and good but one question that is yet to be answered may be the most important one of this post. What is the gospel? The greek word for gospel is euaggelizó. This means “announce good news”. This particular word is used both in the gospel of Luke where it says “I bring you good tidings” and in the book of Galatians where it says “preach any other gospel”. Coincidence? I think not! The gospel is Jesus, the good news is what is stated in verse 11. There is a Saviour and his name is Jesus, Christ the Lord. This is the gospel. It begins with Jesus and ends with Jesus.
I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.
The walk of a Christian does not begin with Jesus and end with something else. There is no deeper message leaving Jesus as just the basics. It is easily understood that if someone is the beginning and the end, there is nothing else to progress to, save more of the same. People often times confuse the gospel of Christ with the message of being born again. Only ignorance to the concept can foster such errant thinking. I can hear the echoes of thought ringing that there are deeper messages than just Jesus. Let God be true but every man a liar.
15 But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother’s womb, and called me by his grace,
16 To reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood:
17 Neither went I up to Jerusalem to them which were apostles before me; but I went into Arabia, and returned again unto Damascus.
18 Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days.
19 But other of the apostles saw I none, save James the Lord’s brother.
As we read further in the first chapter of Galatians we see that Paul’s first thought or obligation was not to the apostles. The men who had actually seen the Lord in the flesh was not the main concern. Paul’s main concern was to preach the gospel and fulfill what God wanted him to do. It was not flesh and blood that he was concerned with. It was not flesh and blood who he conferred with about his calling. God called him and he went to preach the gospel. Jesus Christ, the promised Saviour had come, he could save you from your sins, he could give you eternal life, and redeem you before God.
With Jesus doing and providing so much, why would we want to have any other gospel? He fulfills all parts of life, there is no need for additions or subtractions from the gospel. Jesus is the only message, the only belief, the only doctrine, the only gospel that can stand on it own two feet. If we remove Jesus from any other Bible doctrine then we pervert the gospel, fail as Christians and according to God’s own word are “accursed”.
There is so much more that could be said about this topic but believing that those who show mercy shall obtain mercy I will bring this post to a close.
The most important thing:
If you don’t know Jesus and want to here’s what to do…
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
And you know it works because…
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
